At the age of 21, I was embarking on my entrepreneurship journey. I was young, friendly, and full of enthusiasm. Everyone told me I was just an ideal person to be a Realtor.
I was already fed up and unhappy in the corporate world and I wanted to do things in my own way. I didn’t want anyone to tell me the hours I had to be in the office.
I didn’t want them to limit my salary. I wanted to be my own boss. So I quit my fairly good paying job at the time and got my Real Estate license.
Young and determined I signed up with a well-known broker in California. I was so happy. I was looking at these homes every day, talking to people, seeing open houses, but nothing was happening.
6 months into it, I had a few leads but no real clients. To make the matter worse, my credit card debt was piling up.
My boyfriend at the time was very supportive, yet we both were feeling the lack of my income. I was frustrated, but I wasn’t losing faith. I just knew I could make it work.
As luck would have it, I was talking to another struggling Realtor, he mentioned how his wife’s office was searching for a temporary data entry assistant and pay was good. This was a good fit for me.
I would work from 6 am to noon, which left me the rest of the day to keep on selling real estate. And that is exactly what I did. Once I finished my temp job, I would reach out to my leads and show them homes.
Within two month I closed my first 2 escrows. And I figured out what we would call in the IM world, a niche market that I could dominate.
Fast forward, 6 months after getting that temporary job, I had 5 homes in escrow in 1 month and had already received a 25K check (got a say amazing feeling for a 21-year-old). A few months after that, we bought our very first home.
Most people would have given up and gone back into the corporate world to an unhappy environment. Yet, my experience taught me early on to find a temporary solution if I cannot reach my goals right away but don’t lose sight of the end goal.
